Hidden gems keep the music alive – our vintage music scene

There’s a lot going on in our locality this Thursday night coming. Choose between singing in  the community choir, attending the local arts forum meeting, or:

Mike Fletcher’s Big Band

Playing at 8.30pm at the British Oak pub, 1364 Pershore Rd Stirchley B30 2XS (£3 in and an excellent selection of decently priced beverages). For more info contact Mike Fletcher 0121 444 4129, mike@efletcher.fsworld.co.uk. Please send us photos if you go – for our next post?

Other vintage music things

On the vintage music theme, on the 9th Feb at the British Oak, the Kinda Dukish 16 piece Big Band will be playing original compositions of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. 8.30pm start, £3 in.

Every Tuesday, there is jazz at Bournville Club (B30 2DN, corner of Mary Vale Rad and Franklin Road, near Bournville train station) – Mainly mainstream jazz, except the last Tuesday of the month when it’s Trad. As the leaflet states: “Competent sitters-in usually welcome – ring Jim on 0121 451 3427”. Here is a very nice flickr photo-stream of images of the social club by Billy Fallows.

For a video of TASCOs jazz band by local film-maker Sara Jackson see this you tube clip entitled “Dominos, Ale and Jazz”. TASCOs (Hazelwell Lane, Stirchley, B30 2PR) have a jazz night every Monday from 8.30pm. The intriguing thing about TASCOs is that you have to go down a street of boarded up houses to get to it, but it is signposted:

…and then when you are inside, it is a very nice cosy friendly place to be, as you can see from the you tube clip. Fat Chops Big Band also regularly play in the upstairs room (next gig is Feb 12th with Sara Coleman), where Stirchley Happenings had their first Travelling Bug House screening, and CBSO used for their first Community Choir ‘Come and Sing’ session (and on an unrelated theme, Project Pigeon has used their car park for pigeon art).

Inspired by all these vintage shenanigans, the Sugarfoot Stomp (a collective of mostly Stirchley/ Bournville/ Balsall Heath residing DJs) will be spinning tunes from the 1920s to the 1960s covering all styles of music from America, Britain and France! Their next gig is Friday 3rd Feb at the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath.
